The specimen

Calea zacatechichi — the Mexican dream herb — grown from seed in the Kandyan hills and wildcrafted a leaf at a time. Dried gently and left whole so you can see exactly what you are steeping: serrated green leaves, no powder, no stems bundled for weight. Famously bitter. That is the point of it, and the reason it is taken in small cups before sleep.

Brewing ritual

One heaped teaspoon of crushed leaf per cup. Steep five minutes, drink slowly about half an hour before sleep. Traditionally the tea is taken with the lights low; many keep a notebook beside the bed. Start small.

Very bitter on its own, so I brew it with a spoon of honey as suggested. The leaves are dry, green and clearly fresh. Two weeks in and my dreams have become noticeably more vivid and easier to recall.
