The specimen

Whole blue lotus blossoms, gathered by hand from shallow highland ponds and dried slowly away from direct sun so the petals keep their deep violet-blue. Nymphaea caerulea has been steeped and offered on this island for more than two thousand years. The dried flower is soft, faintly sweet and unmistakably floral — closer to hay and honey than to perfume. One hundred percent flower. No stems, no fillers, nothing added. Sealed in a kraft pouch with a clear window.

Brewing ritual

Use three to five whole flowers per cup. Steep in water just off the boil for five to seven minutes, then strain. Best taken in the evening, in low light. For a gentler infusion, place the flowers in cold water and leave overnight.

The petals arrived whole and impossibly blue — not a single crumb in the pouch. I steeped a few in warm water before bed and the scent filled the whole room. It smells like the lake at dusk, exactly as I hoped.
