The specimen

Cream-white petals with a scatter of orange stamens, dried whole in the shade. White lotus is the quieter of the two lotuses: less aromatic, softer on the tongue, with a faint honeyed warmth that suits a late cup. Gathered from the plains around the ancient tanks, where the flower still opens across the water at first light.

Brewing ritual

Two to four flowers per cup. Steep for four to six minutes; longer draws out a gentle bitterness. Lovely with a spoon of honey and a slice of ginger.

Delicate, clean and very fragrant once brewed. I use it for evening tea with a little honey, and the pouch lasted me nearly two months. Packed beautifully too — it felt like a gift, not a parcel.
